NATION’S
FIRST WIRELESS COMMUNITY
BROADBAND SERVICE DEPLOYED IN CERRITOS, CA
Aiirmesh Communications, Formerly Aiirnet Wireless,
Lights Entire 8.6 Square Mile City in Nation’s Single
Largest Wi-Fi Service Deployment
Cerritos, Calif. - Aiirmesh Communications, a high-speed
wireless Internet service provider deploying the latest in
802.11/Wi-Fi technology, today announced that it has completed
deploying the City of Cerritos for wireless community broadband
services for the citizens of Cerritos, as well as to the
City of Cerritos itself, according to Aiirmesh Communications
CEO, Stan Hirschman.
Cerritos is a Southern California suburban community of
more than 50,000 people that, like many areas in the US,
does not have citywide access for DSL or cable modem broadband.
The Aiirmesh broadband Internet service will be marketed
to residents and businesses in Cerritos as a high-speed alternative
to dial-up Internet, with the added advantage of being thoroughly
wireless and available in all outdoor areas throughout the
city. Pricing for the service will be comparable to wireline
broadband access alternatives with a variety of service plans.
An initial demonstration area of 1.5 square miles was activated
for testing, but now most of the 8.6 square mile area of
Cerritos has been deployed for high-speed wireless Internet
access. “We’ve been able to turn the outdoor
area of Cerritos, CA into the world’s largest hotspot.
Residents and visitors can use their laptops and PDAs from
almost every location within the city limits,” said
Hirschman. “We’ll also be adding additional transmitters
to allow individual neighborhoods to receive in-house wireless
broadband that also seamlessly interoperates with the rest
of the outdoor Cerritos hot zone.”
Aiirmesh is marketing the service to Cerritos residents
via a number of local partners. The City of Cerritos itself
will become one of Aiirmesh’s largest customers, using
the service to provide wireless broadband access to city
workers and available for a variety of public safety initiatives.
The Aiirmesh Wireless Community Broadbandä service
can create a three-to-30 mile “hot zone” in which
subscribers can have free-roaming access to wireless broadband.
Aiirmesh Communications has targeted a number of cities,
towns and districts which currently lack the proper infrastructure
for either DSL or cable modem service, and it is working
closely with the Rural Broadband Coalition (RBC) to identify
the broadband needs of Rural America, which encompasses 75
percent of the land mass of the nation and 25 percent of
the population, yet has virtually no broadband penetration.
“A sizable part of our mission is to make sure that
rural and suburban America does not get left behind by the
broadband revolution,” notes Hirschman. “If these
areas don’t get wired, then we are looking at some
60 million forgotten people who could otherwise be a major
contributor to our country’s productivity.” Hirschman
also added that by enabling wireless broadband for an entire
community, it could add jobs in rural communities by enhancing
telecommuting opportunities to major metropolitan areas.
