Aiirmesh
TO BLANKET CERRITOS, CA, WITH WIRELESS COMMUNITY BROADBAND
SERVICE
New ISP Approved by City Council to Cover
Entire 8.6 Square Mile City in Nation's Single Largest Wi-Fi
Service Deployment
Cerritos, CA Aiirmesh Wireless, a high-speed wireless
Internet service provider deploying the latest in 802.11/Wi-Fi
technology, today announced that it has reached an agreement
with the City of Cerritos to use city owned facilities to
provide Aiirmesh community broadband services to
citizens of Cerritos, as well as to the City of Cerritos itself,
according to Aiirmesh CEO, Stan Hirschman.
Cerritos is a Southern California suburban community of 50,000
people that, like many areas in the US, does not have citywide
access for DSL or cable modem broadband. The broadband Internet
service will be marketed to residents and businesses in Cerritos
as a high-speed alternative to dial-up Internet, with the
added advantage of being thoroughly wireless and available
in all outdoor areas throughout the city. Pricing for the
service will be comparable to wireline broadband access alternatives
with a variety of service plans.
An initial demonstration area of 1.5 square miles was activated
and upon completion the entire 8.6 square mile area of Cerritos
will be deployed for high-speed wireless Internet access.
"When the service goes live January 1st, every outdoor square
inch of the city will be a wireless Internet access point,"
said Hirschman. "We'll also be adding additional transmitters
to allow individual neighborhoods to receive in-house wireless
broadband that also seamlessly interoperates with the rest
of the outdoor Cerritos hot zone."
"As a City that has been on the cutting edge of many community
wide initiatives, we are pleased that Cerritos now becomes
the nation's first city to have Wi-Fi everywhere," said Gloria
Kappe, mayor of Cerritos. "This will serve both as a great
enhancement for city services and will also allow individuals,
small businesses and families the opportunity to cut the cord
to their broadband Internet connection anywhere in the city."
"Since many neighborhoods in Cerritos don't have access to
DSL or cable Internet access, this is an even bigger blessing,"
Kappe continued. "We also believe this can be a boon to many
Cerritos businesses, such as restaurants and coffee shops,
since businesspeople from miles away will know that they can
get super-fast Internet access on their laptops at any business
in the City limits."
Aiirmesh will market the service to Cerritos residents via
a number of local marketing partners. The City of Cerritos
itself will become one of Aiirmesh's largest customers, using
the service to provide wireless broadband access to city workers
and available for a variety of public safety initiatives.
The Aiirmesh service can create a three-to-30 mile "hot zone"
in which subscribers can have free-roaming access to wireless
broadband. Aiirmesh has targeted a number of cities,
towns and districts which currently lack the proper infrastructure
for either DSL or cable modem service, and it is working closely
with the Rural Broadband Coalition (RBC) to identify the broadband
needs of Rural America, which encompasses 75 percent of the
land mass of the nation and 25 percent of the population,
yet has virtually no broadband penetration.
"A sizable part of our mission is to make sure that rural
and suburban America does not get left behind by the broadband
revolution," notes Hirschman. "If these areas don't get wired,
then we are looking at some 60 million forgotten people who
could otherwise be a major contributor to our country's productivity."
Hirschman also added that by enabling wireless broadband for
an entire community, it could add jobs in rural communities
by enhancing telecommuting opportunities to major metropolitan
areas.
